DETAILS
Agnolo Gaddi's "Legend of the True Cross" is a fresco cycle created between 1380 and 1390 for the chancel chapel of the Basilica of Santa Croce in Florence commissioned by the Alberti family. The frescoes illustrate the legendary history of the wood used to make Christ's Cross, drawn from Jacobus de Voragine's Golden Legend. Gaddi was the first to commit the Golden Legend narrative to visual form, providing inspiration for Piero della Francesca's later famous version in Arezzo. The work represents the culmination of fourteenth-century narrative painting development at Santa Croce.
