DETAILS

Sister Deirdre Byrne is an active missionary sister, superior of her community, double board-certified in family medicine and general surgery. Sister DeDe retired from the Army in 2009 after 29 years of service with the rank of Colonel. Sister DeDe’s charitable medical/surgical service included hands-on ministry in the rubble of the twin towers, caring for the sick during the earthquake in Haiti, and annual medical missions to Haiti and Iraq. After a life of medical and military service throughout the world, she was led to the Little Workers of the Sacred Hearts religious community, whose charism involves placing each and every person for whom they care between the Hearts of Jesus and Mary. Currently, she is the superior of the D.C. Little Workers of the Sacred Hearts house near Catholic University, where the sisters run a pro-bono physical therapy clinic and diabetic eye clinic, retirement home for her elderly sisters, and a music school for pre-school children.
