This talk will consider how certain Doctors of the Church - particularly Catherine of Siena, but also Thomas Aquinas and John Henry Newman - addressed the root causes rather than the symptoms of ‘diseases’ in the Church. An analogy to functional medicine will help us see how their insights go far beyond the merely academic and impact every aspect of Christian life, even today. St. Catherine of Siena (1347-1380) was declared a Doctor of the Church in 1970 by Pope Paul VI, making her one of the first women to receive this title alongside St. Teresa of Ávila. She earned this distinction for her profound theological writings, particularly The Dialogue, a mystical work exploring God's nature, divine providence, and the path to holiness. Despite having no formal education, Catherine demonstrated extraordinary spiritual wisdom and influenced Church reform during a turbulent period. She famously persuaded Pope Gregory XI to return the papacy from Avignon to Rome. As a Doctor of the Church, she's recognized for her teachings on prayer, virtue, divine love, and the importance of truth. Her emphasis on knowing oneself in order to know God, and her doctrine of Christ as the "bridge" between humanity and divinity, remain influential in Catholic spirituality. She's often called the "Doctor of Unity" for her work promoting peace and Church unity.
